Tom Gist – One of a Kind Mixtape

•March 9, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I’ve a big fan of Tom Gist ever since he did his first track with Dramasetters Productions back in the day (which is actually on the tape, and those of you who remember me as host of the vibe remember it as the intro for my playset). It’s kinda crazy how such an introspective emcee can fit so well with the whimiscal nignorance we’ve all come to love from Dipset, but that’s just a testament to how talented this dude is.

Super Finale Brothers

The homie Finale (who’s definitely my favorite emcee in the state at the moment) is set a full length LP, “A Pipe Dream and a Promise,” this spring and the good folks over at Interdependent Media put together this small video game rendition of Super Mario Brothers to promote his newest track “One Man Show” with producer Black Milk. If you beat the game you get a free mp3 of the track, and its well woth spending a good 1-3 minutes on. Check it out at http://www.imculture.com/_superfinale/

Or if you kinda suck at it like I did, just check out One Man Show here.

Weekend Recap (3-09-09)

For the last six years I’ve been in Lansing, MI living the college/post-college life  one theme has been a consistent. I never have the money neccessary to go anywhere dope for Spring Break. (There was Cleveland in 2006 but that was hardly dope, one small stroll made it much more Detroit-esque that I’d care for as far as vacations go)

So naturally when the students leave and I stay near campus, the Michigan State University area becomes a virtual ghost town and my NBA 2K game rate surges by about 200%. (as does the accompanied swearing) Nevertheless, the grind is still real and I have to take time to recharge my batteries and focus on the stretch into summer. The weekend leading into break is usually my last real period of time to goof a bit before self-reflection and music become the only two things on the agenda.

I dont play with either of these teams really

I don't play with either of these teams really

So I used to play video games to counter my stress level, now they really just add to it. But like most NBA 2K9 addicts I play franchise mode with my beloved Pistons. It’s crazy how everyone has their own fantasy spin on their particular team and those have a lot of stories you can tell. Basically with my squad I traded nearly all the starters the Pistons have right now (AI for Al Jefferson, Rip to the Nuggets in a three way deal, Tayshaun to the Sixers, ‘Sheed to the Bulls…still got Stuckey though!) and my new star of the future is Nicolas Batum of all people. (Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of him, he gets like 12 minutes a game with the Blazers) 2K9 is like a bad drug….I’ve already broken a controller based on its fuckery, and I know how that movie ends but still I play…

Saturday was back to work, since I host Mic Club a hip-hop showcase with the homie Sincere in Lansing.

Like my boy E-Huff of the Cultural Vibe pointed out, it was kinda of humbling to meet the DJ Of the night, Crazy Caz, because he proceeded me when I was the host over there on Impact 88.9. Dude is definitely from the old school generation of the show before it ever hit G-4 Holden Hall at MSU and he was definitely going the fuck in with the old school music he was spinning pre show.

As far as performances go I always enjoy performing live, and my fellow members of the BLAT! Pack. P.H.I.L.T.H.Y., and V.enson helped me hold it down. P 2 Da HI also had a pretty dope set on his own, leading off the show in the best way possible. Other highlights included my homeboy Frank Lee doing his thing for the ladies and Dirty Politix frenetically serving the crowd with their patented Southwest Detroit style.

Lastly though, there was today. Here’s some math for everyone. Shitty rainstorm + Psychotic assholes in big SUVs + 1-96 = ?

If you guessed anything other than “migraine” then you’re not from Michigan. Or any other state with a population over 200,000.
